Kodiak Island brown bear:
We currently have openings for fall 2008 and spring 2009 for trophy brown bear on Kodiak Island. You must apply for a tag, but the odds of drawing are close to 100% now that the state has cracked down on illegal outfitters. Unless an outfitter has a special-use permit to outfit on the island, he may not have clients apply for a tag. You must apply in May for the fall season, which runs Oct. 5-Nov. 3. You must apply in November for the spring hunt, which runs April 20-May 10. This hunt is usually 100% with all hunters getting a crack at a bear. This hunt produces high success on bears over 9 feet, typically averaging about 9'6". There are openings for fall 2008 and spring 2009 at $13,900. Details.
