Northern Utah rancher offers deer hunts on private ranch at a fair price

This hunt offers a chance to hunt big mule deer on 5,000 acres of private ranchland for as little as $2,250. the landowner and his sons conduct the hunt on their own property. He usually takes two or three hunters per season. Each hunter has his own personal guide, either the rancher himself or one of his sons. His property borders the Deseret Land & Livestock ranch, which is managed for trophy hunting, and so he has very good quality for his acreage. Tags have been available every year after the state permit drawing.

You can choose among a rifle season in late October (full this year), a blackpowder hunter in late September and early October, or a bow hunt in late August and early September.

Hunters usually see bucks in the 24 to 28-inch range and sometimes larger animals.

The rancher took only one deer hunter last year, and he got a buck that scored in the 170s. A bordering section of state ground was sold to an outsider a couple of years ago, and the rancher sold him an easement with the stipulation that he could hunt that property last year and this.

"I would like to get some hunters in there early," he said, "and so I'm setting a good price in order to attract some guys. I think they'll have an excellent chance of getting a nice buck. I would like to take two muzzleloader hunters and one or two bowhunters this year. "

The hunt includes five days of hunting along with lodging in a bunkhouse. Food is not provided, but you can contract with the rancher to provide meals.

"I would say that they could expect to see 24 to 28 inch bucks," he said. "We'll arrange for meat processing and caping, but the taxidermist and butcher fees are not included in the price of the hunt. I would prefer two friends to come together. They'll be the only two hunters on the property."

A bowhunter might get lucky and have a chance at a big bull elk. If you want to buy a tag, you can buy one for

Hunter success Trophy size
Rifle deer hunters are typically 100% successful unless they get too picky, but they all see mature animals . Last year the rancher accommodated only one deer hunters, and he got a buck that scored in the 170s. "The deer are recovering very well from the tough winter two years ago," he said. "We saw some very big bucks this winter."

Muzzleloader deer hunters typically have several chances at mature bucks.

This part of Utah tends to produce some of the state's better bucks each year, mainly because 236,000-acre Deseret Land & Livestock ranch, which borders this property, manages for trophies by limiting the number of deer hunters. Most bordering ranches now severely limit hunter numbers. Muleys average 24 to 28 inches and sometimes get over 30 inches; elk average 340 or more on Deseret, 280 to 320 on most bordering ranches
