This hunt produced six bulls for six hunters in 2004, 2005 and 2006 combined. The antler spreads were 55, 53, 46, 42, 40 and 38 inches. A single hunter in 2003 missed a bull with a rack estimated in the mid-50s. The outfitter has purchased an allocation of 12 archery moose tags. You have the option of adding a mule deer to your hunt. Most bowhunters have a 50 percent chance of taking a deer, the outfitter said. "Bucks average 150 to 160," he said. "Most guys only take them as add-on to the moose tag. Sometimes after we take a moose, then we'll go in on horseback or walk in for muleys. We've sold only four archery mule deer tags in the past two years, and we took two of the hunters after mule deer. One guy didn't try for mule deer at all because we were trying to get a big bull moose that was hanging out in a valley, and we didn't get that bull because he was smart, but we got another bull in the low 40s. So that guy didn't try for mule deer. Another bowhunter had only one day to hunt, and two guys tagged on Day 2 on moose, and then they could go into higher country to glass for mule deer on sidehills feeding. We approach from downwind, sometimes takes two hours to work into position. The deer they took scored 153 and 156 Pope and Young." |
