Montana mule deer hunt offers high hunter success on representative bucks, possible combo with antelope

This outfitter operates on more than 200,000 acres of private land that he leases from ranchers. We have worked with him for more than 15 years. His hunter success has exceeded 95 percent.

"Our bucks on our regular hunts usually range from 22 to 29 inches," he said. "Our hunters all get chances at mature bucks. There are some really big bucks. We have good, representative deer and lots of mature animals. We manage one ranch just for big bucks, but we charge extra there."

There are good numbers of whitetail deer on parts of his leases. He takes a few whitetail hunters a year, and most mule deer hunters can take a big whitetail if they see one. Most bucks harvested range from 135 to 165 Boone and Crockett points.

The outfitter caters to many bowhunters and has figured out how to produce deer for his archery customers. For mule deer he said the most productive method has been to hide by trails in the badlands as the deer move from feeding to bedding grounds or vice versa.

"On the bow hunt we often see bachelor herd sof five to 15 buckds, and it's exciting to see them coming," he said. "It's pretty steep, so we play the wind and hide in the brush downwind of the best trails."

You also may add a pronghorn antelope on your hunt. Most bucks have horns that are 12 to 15 inches long.
