GREAT NEW PRODUCT

I'm impressed with a new product that I highly recommend to hunters. Called PhoneSkope, it's a way to attach your cell phone to your binoculars or spotting scope. I had the company make me a PhoneSkope that allows me to connect my Galaxy Note II to a unique spotting scope that I use, consisting of a Nikon Scope Adapter paired with a Nikkor 300mm F4 lens. Through it I can see and photograph or video tape bucks more than four miles from my house. It's unbelievable. To contact the company check out www.phoneskope.com.

Some hunters prefer to hunt whitetail deer on their own. We work with farmers and outfitters who offer drop camps, trespass permits, landowner permits and leases for do-it-yourself hunters. Here are some self-guided whitetail hunts to consider:

A 1x1 hunt is $500 extra. Meals and cabin lodging are included in the price. License and tag and taxes are not included. Airport shuttle from Edmonton International is included. This is in an outstanding trophy area for deer, and there are some 50-inch moose in the area. Ask about Hunt 5224.

This hunt produced 100% hunter success again in 2011. The average size was down a bit to 153 Boone and Crockett points because one hunter shot a buck that scored in the 140 class. The outfitter said he has been watching several really big bucks that survived hunting season and are almost sure to survive the winter due to a lack of snow and mild temperatures. "We saw a 180 class buck several times before the rut ended and he moved off," he said. "Lately I've been watching a herd of five bucks that will all be great animals this fall, particularly two of them that should end up in the 180s."

"We had 14 bucks registered in our local hunting club two years ago over 180, which has never happened," he said. "The best typical scored 193 B&C. And then in the province we had about 20 bucks that netted over 180, including six over 190. There was a 255 nontypical net taken just behind our camp. There was a 268 nontypical net killed in another unit.

"We saw a lot of big whitetails after the season, and we think this will be one of our best years ever, not only on whitetails but also on muleys, elk and moose." Details.

This hunt is our best bet for rifle hunters to kill a wild, free-roaming trophy-class whitetail buck. Unlike places where most big bucks are taken in Texas or a number of other states and provinces, this hunt is 100% fair chase with no high fences, and so the bigger bucks taken on this hunt are eligible for Boone and Crockett Club records. This hunt takes place on a 7,000-acre ranch about 200 miles northwest of Austin. The outfitter flies the ranch for counts and quality of animals and on his last flight saw bucks in the 160s on the property. Typically the average buck taken grosses in the mid-130s. You'll hunt from stands. There are no high fences. Ranch lodging is included. The hunt is $3,900 with 5 to 6 hunters a week in November. Hunt WD109.

Eastern Plains Colorado hunt offers excellent trophy quality

This outfitter owns and leases land near Lamar, including riverbottom property along the famed Arkansas River, where bucks in the 150s and 160s are relatively common and where bucks in the 170s, 180s and 190s and even some in the 200s live out their lives. The outfitter is known more for producing big muleys, but this year the state has issued a few tags that are valid for whitetail only, so he's anxious to start building a reputation as a producer of trophy whitetails, too. Last year he had a whitetail hunter, but his tag was valid for either species, and that hunter shot a muley in the high 180s on the first morning and didn't even get to the whitetail habitat along the river. This hunt is $5,000, including guide, meals and ranch house lodging. This is for a 2x1 hunt that is five days long. He and his brother, who also ranches in the area, usually get at least one landowner permit each. The season is Dec. 1-14. Ask about Hunt WD3841.

Hunt the famous Arkansas River

This outfitter hunts along some of the tributaries of the Arkansas River as well as along the main river. Rich LaRocco of Hunts.Net got his biggest whitetail, which grossed 188 B&C, while hunting with him. Tags are limited for both residents and nonresidents, leading to low hunting pressure in each unit and allowing bucks the chance to get a few years to grow big racks. You need preference points to draw most of his areas. Hunt WD3837.

Eastern Colorado trophies

One of our outfitters, with whom we started working shortly after he got into the business in the 1990s, has many quality leases in the state, and some of them have big whitetails on them. He doesn't like to take many hunters after whitetails to make sure that each hunter has a quality hunt. This year he wants just one hunter on one ranch and another hunter on another ranch. A couple of years ago he took only one hunter after whitetails, and he got a buck that surpassed 180 B&C score. He didn't take any whitetail hunters last year. Chances are excellent of killing a 150 to 180-class buck and possibly even bigger. $6,500 a person. One hunter per guide. WD3802.

A few openings remain with one of our long-time Kansas whitetail deer outfitters

Alberta for big whitetails

One of our outfitters had his best season ever last year with 100 percent success on whitetail bucks averaging 158 Boone and Crockett points, but he called today to say that he thinks this year will be just as good.

"We had 14 bucks registered in our local hunting club last year over 180, which has never happened," he said. "The best typical scored 193 B&C. And then in the province we had about 20 bucks that netted over 180, including six over 190. There was a 255 nontypical net taken just behind our camp. There was a 268 nontypical net killed in another unit.
